Redwood High Santa’s Sleigh story

When the Bakersfield Christmas Parade Committee was looking for a community partner to help restore Santa’s ride, Redwood High was excited to get on board. A few weeks after the partnership was formed, Santa’s sad old ride was dropped off at Kern Crossroads for a makeover. Construction Technology teacher Mike Najera and his group of enthusiastic helpers, got busy restoring the trailer right away. From the platform to lights to the frame from which decorations will be hung, it was all redone to the specifications of Pam Carlock, parade coordinator. The Redwood High students involved in the restoration project report feeling a great sense of accomplishment. Student Brandon O’Baker stated that he “enjoyed all the technical and electrical work on the parade float. I also enjoyed doing a little of the woodwork.” Sergio Alvarez “mostly loved doing the wood trim and sanding it.” And student Richard Posadas said “the best part was putting the lights on and doing the electrical wiring on the parade float. That was all good stuff.” While contributing to the community project, the students learned valuable wood working, restoration, and electrical skills that they can take with them long after the project is finished.
